Caroline Matthews is a dedicated community leader with a wealth of experience built across continents and industries. Her career has grown and evolved across countries, including England, France and Canada, which allows her to bring a global perspective to local issues. Since moving to Edmonton in 2009, Caroline has called both Capilano and Bonnie Doon home, building strong roots in the heart of Ward Métis and developing a deep appreciation for its vibrant communities. She and her husband, Carey, actively support local events, festivals, and markets. As a mother of two grown children, she understands the importance of fostering strong neighbourhoods and supporting future generations.

Community Involvement

Caroline has consistently prioritized community engagement and advocacy. She has served on various boards and committees, working to strengthen neighbourhoods and create opportunities for residents. In Cambridge Bay, she collaborated with Indigenous leaders on cultural and economic initiatives. Her entrepreneurial experience in England and France reinforced her commitment to business sustainability, a principle she applies to Edmonton’s Ward Métis communities today.

She supports business improvement efforts in key commercial districts and advocates for accessible community programs. Her passion for neighbourhood development extends to local events, ensuring Edmonton remains a vibrant and inclusive city.

Professional Experience

Caroline’s career reflects her commitment to public service and excellence. As a former Vancouver Police Officer and Assistant to the Senior Prosecutor, she gained firsthand experience in law enforcement and legal proceedings. Her work alongside social and health professionals shaped her approach to addressing crime and its root causes.

Caroline’s professional journey spans multiple sectors. She lived in Cambridge Bay, working with Indigenous communities to enhance local tourism and economic growth. She founded a chain of successful coffee shops in England, supporting local employment and pedestrian-focused business development. She was a founding member of the joint medical school for the Universities of Hull and York, managing admissions and addressing the shortage of trained doctors.

After moving to Edmonton, Caroline was selected as Director of Recruitment for the University of Alberta’s Executive MBA and Master of Financial Management programs. She received her Certified Human Resources Professional designation in 2016, validating her expertise in workplace leadership. She also serves as a Provincially Appointed Marriage Commissioner, continuing her dedication to public service.
